Obituary

Mary Ellen Burgener, 99, of Moweaqua, died April 12, 2022 in Shelbyville Manor, Shelbyville, IL.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022 in Little Flock Cemetery, Assumption, IL.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service time in Little Flock Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Little Flock Baptist Church or Moweaqua Public Library.

Mary Ellen was born on February 26 in rural Moweaqua, the daughter of Clarence and Edna Workman Marmor (George) Jackson.  Her step-mother was Maud Keller Marmor.

Mary Ellen was a 1941 graduate of Moweaqua High School and a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, stationed in Washington D.C.  She attended the University of Illinois for a short time until she married Warren Burgener in January 1947.  They resided in Hartsburg, IL., while he taught agriculture, then moved to rural Moweaqua where he farmed with his father and brother until his death in 1996.  Mary Ellen was a member of Little Flock Baptist Church where she and her husband taught Sunday School for 25 years.  She was also a 4-H leader and active member of the Pleak PTA where her children attended.  Mary Ellen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and her pets.

Mary Ellen is survived by daughters, Kay (Gary) Fathauer and Donna (Monte) McElroy, both of Moweaqua; granddaughters, Ginger (Matthew) Trusner, and Erin (Ryan) Steinbach; great-grandsons, Landon and Gavin Trusner and Henry Steinbach; sister, Nina Mortweet; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Rose Jackson, brother James Marmor, and two nieces.
