Obituary

Jack M. Standerfer, 85, of Mahomet, IL, formerly of Decatur, IL, died on Christmas Day, December 25, 2019, of complications from heart disease and pneumonia.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Jack was born November 4, 1934, in Decatur, IL, the son of William O.  and Naomi B. Standerfer. He was a 1952 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and attended Millikin University. Jack was a 50-year union employee of Caterpillar and served his country in the U.S. Army.

Jack was a former Democrat precinct committeeman and served on the Macon County Board, representing District 7, for many years. He served on numerous boards helping the youth of Decatur.  Jack was most happy when campaigning for the Democratic Party.  He was a downstate campaign manager for Michael J. Bakalis, when he ran for Superintendent of Schools, hosted Adlai Stevenson and family, and Rosalynn Carter during their visits to Decatur. Jack assisted Robert Kennedy's campaign manager during Bobby's run for the Presidency. Jack was chosen as Mr. Young Democrat for the State of Illinois and was awarded this honor by then Senator Joe Biden. Jack was proud to call former Senator Paul Simon and sitting Senator Dick Durbin friends.  He was always in touch with our public officials to let them know he appreciated their service.  Jack believed in the importance of voting.  He was a former member of the National Organization for Women.  He believed all women, including his sister, should be paid a decent wage for a good day's work.

Surviving are his sister, Nancy Pinkerton; nephews: Bryan Yates and Jason (Laura) Yates; and the triplets: great-niece, Emma Yates and great-nephews, Aiden and Logan Yates, all of Mahomet, IL.

Preceding him in death are his parents.

Jack was the best brother and uncle and will be missed very much.  He was always grateful for the many blessings in his life and never failed to express that thankfulness.  He would ask for you to be kind and help someone in need.
