David G. Coontz, 83, of Springfield, IL, died March 28, 2023 in Springfield Memorial Hospital.

David was born on June 24, 1939 in Broughton, IL, the son of Joseph Arthur and Vera (Gaines) Coontz.  He married Deborah K. Howard on February 24, 1979 in Pleasant Plains.  She survives.

David was a 1957 graduate of Eldorado High School, Eldorado, IL and later graduated with a BS degree from SIU Carbondale.  He proudly served in the United States Army and was a member of Free Masons.  David served as Past Potentate of Ansar Shrine Temple in 1992 and President of Great Lakes Shrine Association in 1997.  He shared his passion with his son in raising Polled Hereford Cattle and breeding and racing thoroughbred horses.

Surviving is his wife, Deborah; son, Arthur A. "Drew" Coontz of Springfield, IL; brother-in-law, Wayne (Jan) Howard; sisters-in-law, Sally (Gary) Boesdorfer and Barbara Johnson; several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; son, David Matthew Coontz; sister, Sue Ann Argo; and nephew, Joseph Argo.
