Captain Joseph S. Smith, 25, of Assumption died April 4, 1971 in Cambodia.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2017 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Assumption, IL. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Assumption. Full military honors will be accorded.

Captain Smith was born May 7, 1945 in Decatur, IL, the son of Stanley and Eugenia (Nolan) Smith. He married Elaine (Unser) May 30, 1970. She survives.

Captain Smith was a 1963 graduate of Assumption High School, and a 1967 graduate of the University Notre Dame. He earned an MBA from Washington University, St. Louis, MO. Captain Smith entered the United States Air Force in November 1968 and went to Vietnam August 6, 1970. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Notre Dame, IN. and Beta Gamma Sigma, national business fraternity.
